2026 Mini Donut Season: The Tough Days and the Sweet Victories

The 2026 event season has been a challenging one for Delicious Bites Mini Donuts.

Running a mobile food business is unpredictable. You can prepare your equipment, schedule employees, purchase supplies, promote an event, travel to the location, and spend hours setting everything up and still have no control over the weather, attendance, event placement, or how hungry the crowd will be.

This year has reminded us of that more than once.

Since the beginning of the season, we have brought our hot, fresh mini donuts to sporting events, community celebrations, outdoor markets, school activities, fundraisers, concerts, and other events throughout Hunterdon County and the surrounding New Jersey area.

Our calendar has included the Flemington-Raritan Girls Softball Kickoff, Voorhees lacrosse games, the Spring Market on Stangl, the Essex Horse Trials, the High Bridge Soap Box Derby, Hunterdon County Community Day, and several summer concerts.

Some events have been encouraging. Most have been considerably slower than we expected.

The Reality of Being a Food Vendor

People usually see the finished product: a warm tray of mini donuts covered in cinnamon sugar, sprinkles, icing, or many of our other unique toppings.

What they do not always see is everything that happens behind the scenes.

Every event requires planning, loading, transportation, setup, equipment testing, food preparation, staffing, cleanup, and breakdown. There are also event fees, permits, insurance, fuel, ingredients, payroll, and the uncertainty that comes with relying on public attendance.

A slow event does not simply mean fewer sales. It can mean that the business invested significant time and money without receiving the turnout needed to make the day worthwhile. Sometimes an event organizer can tell you, you’ll be 1 of 2 trucks and when you show up theres 4 or 5 vendors for the same size crowd. Sometimes you show up and an event organizer has already booked an abundance of dessert vendors.

Overall, this season has been rougher than we hoped. However, it has also helped us better understand which events are the right fit for Delicious Bites.

A Great Start at Softball Opening Day

One of the brightest moments of our season was the Flemington-Raritan Girls Softball Kickoff at Lenape Park on April 18.

Softball opening day was the kind of community event that works especially well for our business. Families were gathered in one place, children were excited for the beginning of the season, and our hot mini donuts were an easy treat to enjoy between games and activities.

It was encouraging to see families supporting the players, spending time together, and stopping by our stand. Events like this are exactly why we started Delicious Bites.

We are not only selling donuts. We are getting to participate in the moments that make a community feel connected. We love this community and hope we get to do more baseball events.

Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday

Hunterdon County Celebration of Our Nation’s 250th Birthday

Another major highlight was the Hunterdon County Celebration of Our Nation’s 250th Birthday at Deer Path Park on July 8.

The county created a major patriotic celebration featuring food trucks, historical reenactors, a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, a concert by the Hunterdon Symphony, and a large fireworks display. (shout out to Uncle Larry the conductor of Hunterdon County Symphony!)

The atmosphere was incredible.

Families arrived with blankets and lawn chairs, people dressed in red, white, and blue, and the park filled with music, food, history, and celebration. The Hunterdon Symphony performed a program of American and patriotic music featuring works associated with composers such as Sousa, Bernstein, Copland, and others.

Being selected as one of the food vendors for such an important local milestone was meaningful for our family and our business. It was also one of the strongest events of our season.

There is something special about serving hot mini donuts while thousands of people gather to celebrate their community and country. It was the kind of night that reminded us why we love this community centered business and why we love living in Hunterdon County.

Learning What Works for Our Business

A challenging season does not have to be a wasted season.

Every event gives us more information about our customers and the types of opportunities that are best suited for Delicious Bites. So far, we have seen that family-centered events, youth sports celebrations, major community gatherings, and well-attended concerts can be particularly strong opportunities for our mini donut business.

We are also learning that the size of an event does not always determine whether it will be successful for a vendor. Location inside the event, attendance patterns, competing food options, event length, weather, and vendor costs all make a difference.

These lessons will help us become more selective and strategic as we plan future seasons. For us to remain sustainable, we are moving into more private events and pre-order mini donut boxes.

What has been working well, is pre-order family and party size boxes of 64 and 81. Sounds like a lot of donuts but when a single serving is 12 minis, they go fast! We’ve had some great opportunities with fundraisers for schools and pre-order boxes for churches.

Grateful for Everyone Who Has Supported Us

Even during a difficult season, we have a lot to be thankful for.

We appreciate every event organizer who has invited us, every employee who has helped us operate, and every customer who has stopped by for a bag of mini donuts.

Whether you purchased jsix donuts or brought a family size box home, told a friend about us, followed us online, or invited us to an event, you have helped our small business and our small family continue moving forward.

Some days have been harder than others, but our faith in Christ and the support of our local community keeps us motivated.

The Season Isn’t Over Yet

We still believe there are plenty of sweet moments ahead.

We are continuing to improve our setup, awaiting the delivery of a new food trailer, evaluate new opportunities, and look for the events where Delicious Bites can provide the best experience for both organizers and guests.

We are especially interested in family celebrations, weddings, school events, employee-appreciation events, community festivals, sports programs, fundraisers, and private catering opportunities throughout Hunterdon County and New Jersey.

This season may not have gone exactly as we imagined, but we are still here, still learning, and still serving hot, fresh mini donuts.

Sometimes the difficult seasons teach you the most.

And sometimes, after a long day, a warm bag of cinnamon-sugar mini donuts makes everything feel a little better.
